Several Raleigh, NC based organizations have formed the Wake EITC Coalition to assist working families with income tax preparation and filing. The Family Resource Center of Raleigh, Fiscal Progress, Passage Home, AARP and the Triangle United Way have formed a partnership with Wake County Human Services and the Internal Revenue Service.
This partnership will help working families by providing free income tax preparation and electronic filing. Rather than paying for a refund anticipation loan, most refunds will be received within 10 days.
Taxpayers within the Triangle Area may call 2-1-1 (or 1-888-892-1162 from a cell phone) in order to find their closest provider. Income tax preparation and filing is provided by these and other local nonprofit groups that participate in Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) or Tax Aide.
Trained volunteers can prepare your federal and state tax returns and electronically file them for you at no charge. And because most refunds are received within 10 days, there is no need to pay for expensive refund anticipation loans.

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA)
VITA is free and is available to households earning less than $40,000 annually. You will need to bring your tax forms along with social security cards for each member of your family to the VITA site. An appointment is recommended but not required. VITA volunteers are trained directly by the Internal Revenue Service.
Tax Aide
If your household income exceeds $40,000, you will need to request a Tax Aide location. Tax Aide volunteers are trained by AARP. They receive additional training and can assist with investments and rental income. Seniors may find that Tax Aide volunteers have additional experience with more advanced returns, although some situations may be beyond their capabilities. No appointment is necessary.
